Holy fucking shit!
Well, better to hit the side of the semi than to get hit by a semi on the side I guess

Had me fooled! As soon as the video started and I saw that fog , I began concentrating on the truck ahead, expecting that it was suddenly going to have to brake or swerve for stopped traffic. Nope!

Silver car, I wonder if his lights were on, would have been hard to see without them  (it’s not clear that truck’s were on either, don’t drive around in dense fog without lights!).

Looks like the truck’s front wheels were locked up, so he did at least try to stop, but he probably should have done so much sooner.

Whoa. Hwy 30 and 218 in the fog? Cedar Rapids, I’d recognize you by the odor, even over YouTube.

How’d that crossing semi even have time to get into the intersection?

I saw those pictures, looks like the modern safety design of the car did its job. And yeah, better to hit than to get hit by. Also a good thing he didn’t hit the side of the trailer instead, which he could’ve easily gone underneath.

It’s like a perfect jump scare video except it wasn’t staged.

Guess he just didn’t see the warnings and rolled straight through.

Would be nice if side underride protection was required in the US. Truckers would fight it though, I think there are a lot of railroad crossing with absurdly steep breakovers where trucks could high-center if they had underride guards.

Yup. Although some trucks already have them here. The upshot is that they help with aerodynamics.

My impression was that those aero panels didn’t actually have any meaningful structure behind them, if a car hit them they’d just bend/break.

The more I think about it, you’re probably right. They look way too flimsy to be useful.

I could be wrong, but I assume what he truck didn’t see was the stop sign. He likely saw the other truck in front of the silver car when he locked them up.

While yes, they should be on in fog, I’m n ot sure how lights on the silver car would have helped when the offending truck was already full lock and headed straight through the intersection .

Alright, I know the semi blew the intersection, but how did the car not do anything to avoid it?

From the video there’s at least 5 secs when the semi is in view, yet the car just drives into the side of it like its not even there.

I know firsthand that cameras can sometimes see better through this stuff than people can, but as to why the driver didn’t have any reaction at any point, yup that’s odd.
